FIDGET (POSSIBLY) - Cornwall & Devon

The wreck of the Fidget, near Plymouth, is one of those sites we always find ourselves drawn back to. While the official depth is 39m, we've found her lying a touch deeper, often closer to 42m, so plan your gas accordingly. She’s a small sailing vessel, only 9.1m, but what she lacks in size, she makes up for in character. Sunk in 1985 on a passage from Weymouth to Plymouth, she sits upright on the seabed, relatively intact for her age and exposure. We love dropping onto her deck, feeling that familiar chill as the light fades at depth. The mast is broken, lying across the hull, but the general shape is still very clear. You can follow the lines of the railing, now encrusted with dead man's fingers and colourful jewel anemones. Look for conger eels tucked into the darker recesses below deck, their eyes glinting in your torch beam. This is a dive for those who appreciate quiet exploration and the slow reclamation of man-made objects by the ocean. It’s certainly not a dive for beginners, given the depth and often variable visibility, but if you're comfortable with deeper dives in UK waters, the Fidget offers a peaceful, reflective experience. Our favourite time to dive her is on a slack tide, just after high water, when the current often softens enough for a good poke around.
