FREEDOM - Cornwall & Devon

The Freedom, a small fishing vessel that went down in 2005, sits upright on a sandy seabed just off Plymouth. At a shallow 11 meters, it’s a brilliant introduction to wreck diving, particularly for those looking to build confidence without the added pressure of deep-water skills or strong currents. We love how light still penetrates down here, illuminating the structure and making navigation straightforward. You can poke around the wheelhouse, still largely intact, and explore the holds where fishing gear often remains tangled. It’s not just a training ground though; the wreck has become a fantastic artificial reef. We've seen conger eels peering from pipes, crabs scuttling over the hull, and often, schools of pollack hanging just above the mast. Visibility can be hit or miss, typical for the English Channel, but on a good day, it’s remarkably clear, allowing you to appreciate the wreck's structure fully. We’d suggest diving this one on a slack tide, an hour either side of high or low water, to truly appreciate its peaceful vibe and the resident marine life.
