FRIDAY (VRIJDAG) POSSIBLY - Cornwall & Devon

The *Vrijdag* (or *Friday*, if you prefer the anglicised version) at Church Cove isn’t your typical deep wreck dive, and that’s precisely why we love it. At just two metres, it’s a site for those moments when the sea is flat, the sun is shining, and you want to spend a long, leisurely snorkel or super-shallow dive poking about history. This Dutch vessel went down in 1743, carrying a famously rich cargo, and while the cargo’s long gone, the remaining timbers are a fantastic time capsule. What you'll find here are the scattered remains of a large wooden ship, now more a mosaic of ancient timbers than a recognisable hull. We've seen some incredible light play across the dark wood on sunny days, creating a sort of dappled cathedral effect as you fin gently overhead. Shoals of sand eels shimmer around the edges, and the cracks and crevices are home to plenty of wrasse and blennies. It’s a lovely, calm spot for photographers looking for something a bit different, or for new divers gaining confidence in open water. Just remember to check the tides; visibility is always best on a slack, calm day.
