HMS ASSURANCE - Cornwall & Devon

We're always on the hunt for a wreck that tells a story, and the HMS Assurance, just off the coast of Cornwall, delivers. Sunk in 1753 after running aground on The Needles, this 40.5m sailing vessel is now a sprawling collection of timbers, cannons, and ballast stones. At a max depth of 4m, it’s a brilliant shallow dive, perfect for extended bottom times and really soaking in the atmosphere. The wreck is quite broken up, but you can clearly trace the outline of the ship’s hull where ribs poke out from the seabed. Our favourite bits are the cannons, encrusted with dead man's fingers and vibrant anemones, often surrounded by curious wrasse. Visibility here can vary, but on a good day, the sunlight filters through the water, illuminating the kelp forests that sway above the timbers. It’s a peaceful dive, and while you won’t be penetrating cabins, the sheer scale of the debris field invites exploration. It's a fantastic spot for photographers, or anyone who enjoys sifting through history on the seabed. We'd suggest timing your dive for slack water to get the clearest views and easiest navigation.
