HMS VELOX - Cornwall & Devon

Diving the HMS Velox off the Cornish coast isn't about deep exploration. This isn't a site for pushing limits. Instead, we love it for its surprisingly complete structure and the way it sits so shallow, making it a fantastic second dive or a relaxed day out. The Velox, a torpedo boat destroyer sunk by a mine in 1915, rests bolt upright in a mere 9 metres. You can swim the entire 64-metre length of the hull, tracing the deck plates and peering into where the engine room would have been. What truly makes it special, though, is the sheer density of plumose anemones. They coat every surface, a shaggy, off-white carpet that pulses gently with the surge. Look closer amongst them for squat lobsters and the occasional blenny peeking out. On a sunny day, the light penetration is incredible, illuminating the wreck’s details and making the anemones glow. We always suggest timing your dive for slack water, particularly if there’s been any swell; it can get quite lively down there otherwise. Keep an eye out for dogfish tucked under the plating too; they’re often snoozing in the shadows. This wreck is perfect for photographers or divers who appreciate history and macro life without the pressure of depth.
