HMSM UNTIRING - Cornwall & Devon

The HMSM Untiring, a World War II U-class submarine, rests upright in 50 metres of water off the Lizard. We love this wreck for its character, a proper submarine shape still largely intact despite being scuttled as an anti-submarine target in 1957. Dropping down, the bow is often the first thing to emerge from the gloom, long and slender. You can still see the torpedo tubes, gaping like empty eyes. Moving along the 55-metre hull, the conning tower is still prominent, a sturdy structure now encrusted with dead man’s fingers and hydroids. Visibility here can be a real lottery. We’ve had days where you can see the whole length of the boat, and others where it’s an arm’s reach, which makes for a very different dive. Keep an eye out for conger eels, they’re almost guaranteed residents, often poking their heads from hatches or blast holes. Our favourite spot is the stern, where the propeller shaft is still visible, attracting shoals of pouting and sometimes a solitary anglerfish tucked into the growth. This is a dive for experienced wreck enthusiasts comfortable with deeper profiles and potentially strong currents.
