JADE STAR GYPSY - Cornwall & Devon

The Jade Star Gypsy, a small fishing vessel lost to a faulty seacock back in '85, might not be the biggest wreck down there, but we love it for its character. It sits upright at 46 metres, quite a deep dive, making it one for those with advanced certs and a bit of cold-water experience. You're looking at a compact dive, perfect for a single bottom time, but what you lose in size, you gain in atmosphere. Dropping down, the visibility here can vary wildly, but on a good day, the outline of the wreck starts to resolve itself from the blue, a solitary shape on the seabed. We often find conger eels peering from every nook and cranny, their heads like grizzled old men. Look closely for those tiny jewel anemones clinging to the hull plates, adding splashes of unexpected colour. It’s a proper dive into local maritime history, a quiet memorial to the working boats of the Cornish coast. We'd suggest timing your dive for slack water, always, to fully appreciate the details without fighting a current.
