Why dive here
With 176+ marine species recorded in the area - including blue sharks, dolphins, dwarf minke whales, humpback whales and ocean sunfish (mola mola) - LAUWERZEE offers some of Cornwall & Devon's richest wreck diving. Water ranges 10-18°C, warmest July, August, September.
The Lauwerzee is a proper dive, one we really rate for experienced wreck heads off the Cornish coast. At 58 metres, this old Dutch tug sits upright and intact, just waiting for a twinset and some decent bottom time. We love dropping onto her stern, seeing the propeller still in place, then slowly working our way forward. This isn't a wreck you rush; the bridge is particularly interesting, often full of squat lobsters and the occasional conger eel peeking out from a porthole. Visibility can be brilliant here, maybe 15 metres on a good day, letting you really appreciate her structure. She went down in 1940 after hitting a mine, and you get that sense of history down there, a real connection to the war. Keep an eye out for dogfish resting on the sand nearby; they often cruise past while you're doing your decompression. Our advice? Pick your weather window, go on slack tide, and bring plenty of gas. It's a dark, deep dive, but the rewards are there.
