LOE BAR WK - Cornwall & Devon

Loe Bar Wreck isn't what you'd call a conventional dive site. At a maximum depth of one metre, sometimes even less, it's more of a snorkel and wade, but don’t let that put you off. This is a place for history buffs and anyone who loves a good story. We love coming here with a mask and fins on a calm day, especially at low tide, when the remains of these old ships really expose themselves. You’re exploring a graveyard of vessels, some dating back centuries, broken up by the relentless Cornish storms. The timbers are dark, often encrusted with mussels and green weed, and the ironwork, twisted and rusted, tells a tale of rough seas and unforgiving shores. We often spot small blennies darting between the frames and sometimes a curious crab scuttling away from the shadow of your hand. It’s not about big pelagics or colourful corals here, it’s about touching history, feeling the cold sea surge around your legs, and imagining the fates of those old sailors. Best to go when the sun’s out, it really makes the shallow water sparkle over the dark wood.
