LUCILLA - Cornwall & Devon

The Lucilla wreck, sitting upright in around 19 metres, feels like a proper piece of maritime history, not just another pile of twisted metal. It’s a wooden yacht, sunk back in 1944, and her graceful lines are still very much in evidence. We love poking around the bow, which is often swarming with pollack, and the stern, where you’ll frequently find crabs scuttling over the decking. What really makes Lucilla special is how intact she remains. You can clearly make out the deck, the mast step, and even parts of the cabin structure. When the visibility’s good, maybe 8-10 metres, it's a wonderfully atmospheric dive, almost like swimming through a museum exhibit. We've often seen dogfish nestled down in the sand nearby, and the whole wreck is covered in dead man's fingers and anemones, which just adds to the colour. This site is a fantastic dive for those newer to wreck diving; the depth is comfortable, and there's plenty to see without needing to penetrate. It’s also one of our favourite spots for a second dive of the day when you want something a bit more relaxed.
