MOLINA - Cornwall & Devon

The Molina is a proper dive, no doubt about it. Dropping onto her deck at 33 metres, you’re straight into a piece of history, and we love how she lies fairly intact, considering the century she’s spent down there. Built in Norway in 1905, she met her end in 1918, a casualty of the Great War, and it’s that sense of a bygone era that really grabs you. Her two boilers are a prominent feature, often swarming with pollack, and we always find ourselves drawn to the triple-expansion engine, a marvel of early 20th-century engineering now encrusted with dead man’s fingers. The visibility here can play tricks, from 15 metres to a murky 5, so picking your day is crucial – a slack tide and a bit of sunshine make all the difference. We’ve found the stern area to be particularly atmospheric, with schools of bib darting through the shadowed holds, and the odd conger eel peeking from a darkened pipe. This is a dive for those who appreciate wrecks with a story, not just a structure, and it definitely suits divers comfortable with deeper profiles and varying conditions.
