Why dive here
With 176+ marine species recorded in the area - including blue sharks, dolphins, dwarf minke whales, humpback whales and ocean sunfish (mola mola) - NICHOLA (PROBABLY) offers some of Cornwall & Devon's richest wreck diving. Water ranges 10-18°C, warmest July, August, September.
There’s a small, slightly spooky charm to the Nichola, a Hurley 22ft yacht lying in just 8m of water. We say 'probably' because its exact identity is a little hazy, adding to its mysterious appeal. It’s not a grand, imposing wreck, but a compact, intimate exploration, perfect for divers who appreciate the quiet beauty of a boat slowly reclaiming itself by the sea. Drop down onto the Nichola and you’ll find its small cabin surprisingly intact, inviting you to peer through the companionway. It’s a tight squeeze, not really for entering, but it offers a great peek into the ghostly interior. Around the hull, we’ve found decent-sized crabs scuttling amongst the growth and small shoals of pollack often hang close to the mast, which still lies mostly attached. Our favourite time to dive it is on a calm, bright morning; the shallow depth means good light penetration, making the wreck glow a soft green. It’s an easy, relaxing dive, excellent for photography, and a great second dive after exploring one of the deeper local wrecks.
