ROSE OF DEVON - Cornwall & Devon
The Rose of Devon, a sailing vessel that met its end in a fierce gale off Portreath in 1897, now lies scattered in the shallows. We're talking seriously shallow here, just a metre deep, which makes it more of a snorkel and free-dive site than a traditional scuba expedition. What's left of her timbers and hull plates is spread across the seabed, a dark skeletal outline against the sand. You'll find crabs scuttling amongst the ribs and small blennies darting into crevices. It’s a compelling glimpse into maritime history, best visited on a calm day with good visibility, when the sun can really illuminate the remains.
