Dropping onto the UB 106, or what we strongly suspect is her anyway, feels like a real journey back. The wreck lies so shallow, just 4 metres, that light penetrates right down, illuminating the distinct outline of the submarine. You can really get a sense of her shape, the bow and stern still clearly defined despite the decades of erosion. We love how the metalwork has become completely encrusted; it’s a living reef now, with tiny crabs scuttling over the plates and blennies peeking from every crevice. Exploring the conning tower area is our favourite part, imagining the crew. For such a shallow dive, it offers a surprisingly rich experience, perfect for newer divers keen on history or photographers looking for ambient light. The UB 106 is a brilliant example of how even a "dangerous wreck" can become a vibrant, accessible ecosystem.
