VALKYRIE - Cornwall & Devon

Valkyrie. Just the name conjures up a bit of drama, doesn’t it? This isn’t some deep, technical dive, but it’s one we always enjoy for a quick dip in Mount’s Bay. The wreck itself is a yacht, sunk back in '55, sitting upright and pretty much intact in a shallow 11 metres of water. We love it because it’s so accessible, perfect for a long bottom time, and usually offers decent visibility unless there’s been a good blow. You’ll find the main deck structures still there, creating plenty of nooks and crannies for exploration. Conger eels often peek out from darker corners, and the hull is covered in plumose anemones, especially if you catch it in spring or autumn. Look out for dogfish resting on the sand nearby, and we’ve often seen spider crabs scuttling across the deck. It’s a fantastic site for newer wreck divers to get a feel for penetration without any real commitment, or for photographers who want to spend some time composing shots. It’s also one of our favourite spots for a night dive – the anemones glow, and the atmosphere shifts entirely.
