ZEEMANSBLIK - Cornwall & Devon

Zeemansblik, a trawler that went down in 1965, sits comfortably on Atherfield Ledge. We love a wreck that still feels like a ship, and Zeemansblik delivers. You can pick out the bow, the stern, and even some of the fishing gear, all now encrusted with plumose anemones and dead man's fingers. It’s a proper rummage, this one, with lots of nooks for conger eels to hide in, and the occasional lobster peeking out from under a plate of steel. Visibility here can be a bit of a lucky dip, as is common in British waters, but when it’s good, the light catching the kelp-draped superstructure is something else. Our favourite time to dive it is on a slack tide, otherwise, you'll be zipping past the portholes quicker than you can say "pollock." It’s a solid dive for anyone comfortable with a bit of current and keen to explore a piece of maritime history that’s become a bustling artificial reef. Just keep an eye on your depth gauge, as the ledges around it can give a false sense of security.
