MUSA Cancun Underwater Museum of Art - Cozumel

MUSA, or the Cancun Underwater Museum of Art, isn't your typical reef dive. Forget chasing big pelagics here; this is about art, and the evolving relationship between man-made structures and the ocean. We love MUSA because it’s so utterly unique – sculptures slowly being claimed by algae and small corals, creating a strange, beautiful juxtaposition. You’ll drop down onto a sandy bottom where hundreds of statues stand, eerily still. Some are figures, some are houses, all inviting close inspection. We’ve found ourselves lingering over the intricate details, watching a parrotfish peck at an ear or a damselfish dart through a sculpted doorway. The visibility can vary, but generally it's decent enough to appreciate the scale of the installations. It's a shallow dive, maybe 8-10 meters, so you get plenty of bottom time to explore. Keep an eye out for the smaller stuff – we’ve spotted tiny gobies perched on heads and even a sleepy Caribbean pipefish camouflaged against a concrete dress. It’s perfect for photographers looking for something a bit different, or anyone who appreciates a quirky, thought-provoking dive that’s light on current and heavy on novelty. Our favourite time to go is late morning, before the afternoon boat traffic kicks up the sand too much.
