Crystal Divers - Bali

Crystal Divers in Bali. Look, we’re not going to lie, it’s a bit of a trek to get out here, but it’s absolutely worth the effort for the chance of seeing a thresher shark. We usually drop in early, before the sun gets too high, when the light is still a bit soft, hoping to catch them making their morning rounds. The reef drops away pretty sharply here, and that’s where you want to keep your eyes peeled – often they cruise along the edge, sometimes with big-eye trevally schooling nearby, their silver bodies flashing. It’s a dive for those who appreciate the thrill of the chase, the patience required, and the sheer luck involved in spotting these magnificent creatures. It’s not just about the big stuff, though. We’ve had some fantastic encounters with Bali catsharks tucked away in crevices and spent ages watching spotted green gobies flitting around their burrows. The variable strombs are everywhere, adding a splash of colour to the sandy patches. While the reef itself isn’t the most vibrant we’ve ever seen, the sheer number of species, over 350, means there’s always something interesting to find if you slow down and really look. This is a dive that suits experienced divers who are comfortable with potential currents and can handle a bit of depth, or anyone with good buoyancy control looking for that truly special encounter. We’d suggest going with a local guide; their knowledge of the currents and the threshers’ habits is invaluable.
