KARYA ABADI - Bali

The Karya Abadi, a wooden-hulled ferry that sank back in '75, is a proper treat for wreck enthusiasts. It's not one of those sprawling metal behemoths, more a testament to time and the sea's quiet reclamation. We love the way the wooden structure has softened over the decades, creating these intriguing textures, almost like a ghost ship melting into the reef. You'll find it well covered in colourful soft corals and sponges, with schools of fusiliers often circling the remaining deck structures. Look closely and you’ll spot nudibranchs tucked into the crevices and the occasional turtle resting on the hull. Our favourite part is exploring the smaller nooks and crannies, imagining the ferry in its active life. It’s a gentle dive, generally, but the depth means it’s best for those comfortable with deeper profiles. We’d suggest going in the morning; the light filtering through the water onto the wreck is simply magical, really highlighting the vibrant colours of the corals. It’s a dive that rewards slow exploration, perfect for photographers or anyone who appreciates the quiet beauty of a wreck surrendered to the ocean.
