LAUTAN BERKAT - Bali

Lautan Berkat. It means 'Ocean of Blessings', which feels pretty apt once you’re down there. This isn’t one of those carefully placed, artificial reefs; this is the real deal, a container ship that went down in 2011, and it’s taken on a whole new life. We love how relatively shallow it sits, mostly around 16 metres, making it a seriously relaxed dive even for those with fewer logged hours. Drop down and you’re immediately enveloped by the sheer scale of the wreck. The ship lies on its side, split into a few sections, which makes for some fantastic swim-throughs – nothing too tight, but enough to feel like you’re truly exploring. You can poke your head into old cargo holds, seeing where light spills through gaps in the twisted metal. Our favourite part is probably the bow section, often blanketed in glassfish, so thick they shimmer like a silver curtain. Look closely, and you’ll spot crocodilefish camouflaged on the plating, and we’ve seen some hefty groupers lurking in the shadows. The currents here are generally mild, making it a great spot for photographers wanting to take their time. We’d suggest going in the morning; the light filtering through the shallower parts of the wreck is just something else. It’s a bit of industrial history, completely reclaimed by the ocean.
