Mama Dive - Bali

Mama Dive. Now there’s a spot we talk about a lot, especially when someone asks us where to find the weird and wonderful without too much fuss. Tucked away in Bali’s northeast, it’s not the dramatic drop-off or the pelagic highway, but rather a proper muck dive that delivers some of our favourite critters. We're talking serious macro, the kind that makes you want to bring a magnifying glass down with you. The seabed here is a mix of sand and rubble, dotted with sponges and the occasional soft coral. It’s perfect for spotting Freckled Anglerfish patiently waiting for a meal, or a Rosy Frogfish blending in like a lumpy sponge. We’ve spent whole dives just combing through a small patch, finding everything from Elegant Sandburrowers darting between the debris to the intricate patterns of a Sargassum Nudibranch. Keep an eye out for Shimada's and Pudgy Pygmygobies – they’re masters of disguise and a real treat when you spot one. Visibility can vary, but generally, it’s good enough for those close-up shots. We always suggest going in the morning; the light is better for photography and it's usually less busy. If you’re a diver who loves to slow down, really observe, and hunt for the small stuff, Mama Dive should be high on your list.
