Underwater Shrine - Bali

Beneath the surface off Bali, past the initial bustle of snorkel boats, lies the Underwater Shrine, a site that always makes us smile. It’s a slightly surreal, deliberately placed collection of Balinese statues, a serene garden temple reimagined in blue. Descending through the calm, often green-tinged water, the first thing you notice is the way light filters down, catching the moss and coral growth on the stone figures. It’s not a deep dive, maybe 15 metres at most for the main structures, making it perfect for a relaxed hour or two. We love exploring the nooks and crannies here, peering into the cupped hands of a Buddha statue to find a tiny Gelatinous Cardinalfish hovering, or spotting a flashy Bicolor nudibranch inching along a stone offering bowl. The Staghorn coral is really starting to take hold, creating genuine habitat amongst the artistry. Look closely around the larger statues; we’ve often found Freckled Anglerfish perfectly camouflaged on the weathered stone, and the cheeky Shimada's Pygmygoby darting between the crevices. It’s a low-key, genuinely charming dive, ideal for photographers wanting something a bit different, or anyone who appreciates a quiet, reflective dive without strong currents.
