Why dive here
With 515+ marine species recorded in the area - including barracuda, blue-spotted stingrays, bull sharks, giant moray eels and manta rays - UTAMA 9 offers some of Bali's richest wreck diving. Water ranges 29-31°C, warmest April, May, November.
Utama 9 is a curious little dive, a barge sunk deliberately in about eight metres of water. It's not a deep dive, which we love, making it perfect for longer bottom times and really soaking in the details. You can swim right through the cargo hold, which is now home to a flurry of cardinalfish and the occasional grumpy lionfish tucked into a shadowed corner. It’s an easy swim, no real current to worry about, just gentle undulations pushing you around a bit. We think Utama 9 is ideal for divers who appreciate the subtle beauty of an artificial reef and the critters it attracts. On our last visit, we spent ages watching a pair of clownfish defending their anemone on the wreck’s superstructure, their feisty little charges a joy to observe. Keep an eye out for nudibranchs too; they love grazing on the algae that’s slowly reclaiming the metal hull. It's a relaxed site, a quiet counterpoint to some of Bali's more bustling dives, and our favourite for an easy second or third dive of the day.
