WAHANA UTAMA V - Bali

The Wahana Utama V is a deep dive, no two ways about it. We’re talking 50 metres, so this isn’t one for the freshly certified. But for those with the training and the gas, it’s a seriously atmospheric wreck. She went down in heavy weather back in '96, a cargo vessel on her way to Lombok, and you can still feel that sudden end. We love dropping down the line and seeing her emerge from the blue, a big, imposing silhouette. The wreck itself is intact, resting upright on the sandy bottom, which is always a bonus. You can swim over the cargo holds, sometimes even peer into them, imagining what she was carrying. The wheelhouse is a highlight; it’s still fairly recognisable, and you often find schools of fusiliers swirling around it, flashing silver in your torch beam. Look out for the resident barracuda, too. They’re usually just hanging out, watching you watch them. Visibility can be a bit variable here, so we always try to hit it on a calm morning, maybe even a little before the dive boats get too busy. It just adds to that sense of quiet exploration.
