Castle Wall - Grand Cayman

Frenchman’s Reef, despite its shallow max depth of 7m, is one of our favourite spots for a leisurely explore, especially when the weather is a bit squally. It’s got a real character, poking its head out of the water at low tide, then dropping gently to a sandy bottom that’s surprisingly busy. The average visibility of 2m might sound like a drawback, but we find it just adds to the sense of discovery. You’re often pushing through thick kelp fronds, peering into the reef's many holes and crevices. We’ve found morays peering out from almost every crack here, and the sand patches are often dotted with kina. It’s a site that rewards slow, deliberate diving. Our tip? Go early, before the Bay of Islands boat traffic gets too heavy. A dive flag is non-negotiable here. For those who enjoy poking around, finding the smaller details, Frenchman’s is a little treasure. It’s not about grand vistas, but about the intimate, often surprising, encounters you have within its kelpy embrace.
