Haian Maru - Chuuk (Truk) Lagoon

The Haian Maru feels like stepping into a ghost story. We love this wreck because it’s surprisingly intact, sitting upright, and so accessible. You can slip into the holds and find heaps of sake bottles, still in their wooden crates, a real eerie glimpse into the past. Down in the engine room, shafts of light pierce through, illuminating schools of glassfish that shimmer around the machinery. Our favourite part has to be the stern, where the prop is still in place and big schools of unicornfish often mill about. We’d suggest going early in the morning, before other boats stir up the sediment, for the best visibility inside. It’s a site that really makes you slow down, absorbing the history and the way the reef has completely reclaimed the ship. You’ll find plenty of black sea cucumbers draped across the decks, and we’ve seen some huge parrotfish grazing on the coral growth.
