Hoki Maru - Chuuk (Truk) Lagoon

The Hoki Maru really hits different. We’ve always found ourselves drawn to the bow, where those three Type 95 Ha-Go light tanks sit chained to the deck. It’s a sobering sight, hinting at the ship's last frantic moments. Penetration is what makes the Hoki special, though. We love navigating the cavernous holds, past sake bottles, gas masks, and the eerie, skeletal remains of trucks. Visibility inside the holds can drop quickly if stirred, so good buoyancy and a powerful torch are essential. The engine room is another highlight, a sprawling industrial space now home to schools of snapper and barracuda. Outside, the superstructure is draped in soft corals, purple and green, with anthias flitting about like confetti. Keep an eye out for grey reef sharks patrolling the deeper sections. The Hoki Maru is a classic Chuuk dive, ideal for divers comfortable with overhead environments and keen to spend an hour absorbing the history etched into every corroded plate. It’s a wreck that truly tells a story.
