Nippo Maru - Chuuk (Truk) Lagoon

The Nippo Maru in Chuuk Lagoon, oh, where do you even begin? We love this wreck because it’s a time capsule, a snapshot of history frozen underwater. Dropping onto the deck, usually around 30 metres, you immediately feel the scale of this freighter. Our favourite is peering into the holds, where you’ll find a mix of Japanese Type 95 Ha-Go tanks, artillery pieces, and even some trucks – it’s a bizarre, compelling sight. Visibility here can sometimes be a bit hazy, giving the whole scene a ghostly, atmospheric feel. You’ll definitely want a good dive light to punch through the gloom and properly illuminate the artefacts. Keep an eye out for batfish patrolling the superstructure and the usual reef sharks cruising the perimeter. It’s a dive for those who appreciate history and don't mind a bit of a penetration to really get among the cargo.
