Sankisan Maru - Chuuk (Truk) Lagoon

The Sankisan Maru is one of those wrecks that just grabs you. We love dropping down onto the stern, watching those huge Japanese Type 96 aircraft engines come into view, almost perfectly preserved in the cargo holds. There’s something eerie about seeing them lined up, still ready for use, centuries of work just frozen in time. The bow section is our favourite for penetration. You’re weaving through cases of ammunition, stacks of rifle barrels, and all sorts of general cargo. Light filters in from the bomb damage, illuminating schools of fusiliers that hang in the shadows, so thick you can almost swim through them. Keep an eye out for the resident moray eels peeking from the darker corners. While it's not a deep dive, the tight squeezes and potential for silt-outs mean it's best for divers comfortable with overhead environments. Our pick for timing? Mid-morning, when the sun angle hits just right, turning the cargo holds into a surreal theatre of light and shadow. It's a truly evocative dive, a real window into a moment in history.
