WISSMAN (POSSIBLY) - Diani Beach & South Coast

We love the Wissman, even with the ‘possibly’ attached to its name. It’s a proper piece of history, just 9 metres down, making it perfect for a long, relaxed dive. Built in 1890, this old steamship met its end in 1916, and now it’s a skeleton of its former self, draped in soft corals. You can swim through the main cargo holds, imagining the goods it once carried, and peek into the engine room, where the triple-expansion engine still sits. The wreck itself is home to so much life; we’ve seen moray eels peeking out from every crevice and massive schools of snapper swirling around the bow. The visibility here can be superb, especially in the mornings before the wind picks up, giving the whole site a ghostly, ethereal feel. It’s a great spot for photographers, or anyone who enjoys feeling a direct connection to the past on their dive.
