Protea banks - KwaZulu-Natal

Davis Reef is a consistent player for us in the Upper Keys. We’ve probably logged more dives here than anywhere else, and for good reason: it rarely disappoints. Our favourite spot is right around the Christ of the Abyss statue, where the reef structure offers plenty of nooks and crannies to explore. On a good day, the water just shimmers, and you’ll find yourself drifting along, watching schools of French grunts and spot snapper hang in the gentle current. Look closely, and you’ll spot a saddled blenny peeking out from a crevice or a granular frog shell tucked away. We often see cowfish grazing the bottom, and the pillar coral formations here are some of the healthiest in the area, absolutely teeming with smaller reef fish. It’s an easy dive, usually shallow enough that you can really take your time, often 10-15 metres, making it perfect for photographers or anyone who just wants a relaxed, colourful experience without battling strong currents.
