Adventure Reef - 2 Mile Reef - Sodwana Bay

Adventure Reef, part of Sodwana’s larger 2 Mile system, is a site we’ve always enjoyed, especially if you’re looking for a slightly shallower dive without sacrificing the drama. It’s mostly gentle coral domes rising from the sandy bottom, with an average depth around 16m, making it a comfortable spot for longer bottom times. Our favourite feature has to be the two prominent shallow caves. You can often glide right in, feeling the slight drop in temperature, to find a resident group of whitetip reef sharks resting, and usually a chunky giant moray eel peeking out from a crevice. Keep an eye out for the unusually high number of redbarred rockcod on the southern section; they seem to be everywhere, often just hovering in the current. We’ve also spotted everything from the intricate patterns of a Sinhalese leatherjacket to the goofy grin of a freckled anglerfish tucked into a coral head. Visibility here averages around 12m, but on a good day, when the light hits those sand patches, it can feel like a vast blue expanse. It’s a great choice for divers who appreciate macro life and those gentle encounters with bigger animals without needing to go deep.
