Simons Caves and Overhangs

Simons Caves is one of those sites we always try to get on the schedule if the conditions are right. It’s not the deepest dive, topping out at 16m, but the topography is just fascinating. We’re talking about a maze of overhangs, little grottos, and short swim-throughs, all carved into the reef. It feels less like a typical reef dive and more like exploring an ancient, submerged structure. Light filters in from above, creating these beautiful shafts that illuminate patches of soft coral, especially the smooth cauliflower corals and Montipora. You’ll find little fish tucked into every crevice – we often spot Chestnut Blennies peering out, or a Coral Blenny darting for cover. Look closer for tiny creatures like Elegant Sandburrowers on the sandy patches just outside the caves. The shadows are also prime spots for bigger fish like Saddled Rockcod and even the occasional juvenile Black Beauty Snapper. We find the best time to dive here is when the swell is minimal. Too much surge makes navigating the tighter spots a bit less enjoyable, and it can kick up the sand, dropping that average 14m visibility. It’s a great site for photographers who enjoy playing with light and shadow, or anyone who just loves a good explore. You’re guaranteed to come out having seen something interesting, even if it’s just a tiny Blackspotted Rockskipper clinging to the cave roof.
