Angel Diving Center - Trincomalee & East Coast

Angel Diving Center, really, is less a specific dive site and more a basecamp for exploring Trinco’s more intriguing spots. When we talk about diving here, we’re generally talking about the network of reefs and wrecks accessible from the centre’s boat. We’ve had some cracking dives out here, particularly around the Swami Rock area where the shelf drops away, giving you a proper sense of scale. Visibility can be temperamental, but when it's good, you’re looking at 20 meters plus, with the sun spearing down onto the sandy patches. We’ve seen a lot of morays here: honeycomb, undulated, even a shy false brown tucked into a crevice. Look closely among the coral bommies for Redlined Pygmygobies flitting about. Our favourite time to dive is early morning, before the fishing boats get too busy, when the big trevally schools are still cruising the blue. Keep an eye out for sorrah sharks patrolling the deeper edges; they’re often a fleeting shadow, but a genuine thrill. The currents can pick up, so it's a good place for divers comfortable with a bit of drift. Expect healthy coral growth, punctuated by sandy stretches where mangrove crocodilefish lie perfectly camouflaged.
