HMS Hermes - Trincomalee & East Coast

The San Diego wreck isn't just a hunk of metal on the seabed, it’s a portal back to 1600. We love it because it’s a proper piece of history, sunk in a naval battle, and now a fantastic dive. Drop down and you’ll find cannons, jars, and plates scattered amongst the structure, still largely intact despite the centuries. It sits on a sandy slope, starting at around 18 metres and dipping deeper, so it’s accessible for Advanced Open Water divers. What makes it special for us is the mix of history and current life. You’ll weave through the timber ribs and iron hull, spotting enormous groupers lurking in the shadows. Look for flat-faced seahorses clinging to the growth, or maybe a cleverly camouflaged anglerfish waiting for dinner. The visibility here can vary, but even on an average day, the sheer scale of the wreck and the stories it whispers make it a truly engaging dive. Go early to avoid the crowds; it's a popular spot for a reason.
