MAIMYO - Trincomalee & East Coast

The Maimyo, resting in just 10 metres of water, is an absolute standout. We love how accessible it is, perfect for extended bottom times without worrying about deco. This isn't one of those sprawling wrecks you get lost in; it’s more of a compact, atmospheric experience. The ship was sunk by the Japanese in WWII, and you can still make out the bow and stern, though time and the ocean have done their work. What you'll find here is less about penetration and more about the vibrant ecosystem that’s claimed the metal. Schools of fusiliers often mill around the superstructure, so dense they practically obscure the light, and we’ve had some fantastic encounters with lionfish hovering in the nooks and crannies. Keep an eye out for the resident moray eels, too; they're usually peeking out from behind a plate, quite unfazed by divers. Our favourite way to dive the Maimyo is slowly, circling the wreck multiple times to really absorb the details and the marine life. It’s a photographer’s dream, especially on a sunny day when the light penetrates right to the seabed, illuminating the fish in their jewel tones. We'd suggest going early in the morning for the best visibility and fewer other boats.
