KONIGSBERG - Mafia Island

KÖNIGSBERG. Just the name conjures up images of history, doesn't it? This isn't your typical wreck dive, and that's precisely why we love it. What’s left of the German light cruiser, scuttled by the British in 1915, now sits in an almost impossibly shallow 2 metres of water. We're talking barely above snorkel depth. You'll find yourself practically eye-level with history here, spotting the rust-stained plates and twisted metal. It's a bizarre, almost surreal experience to hover above something so significant in such clear, calm water. Schools of snapper often drift through the superstructure, and we’ve seen some surprisingly large groupers lurking under the remaining hull sections. Our favourite part? How the sunlight dances through the water, illuminating the wreck in different ways throughout the day. Go at high tide for the best visibility; it just adds to the magic. This site is perfect for those who appreciate history as much as marine life, and it's brilliant for photographers wanting to capture something truly unique.
