Milimani South - Mafia Island

Pointe Batterie is our favourite spot in Cousteau Reserve when we’re in the mood to slow right down. Forget the big swim-throughs and wall dives here, this is a site for the patient, for those who love to really look. It’s essentially a gentle slope of mud and rubble, dropping to about 17 metres, which sounds less than thrilling on paper, but trust us, this place is alive. We’ve found so much here – tiny pearlfish hiding in sea cucumbers, brittle stars draped over sponges, and more nudibranchs than we can count. Keep an eye out for cowfish, too, trundling along the bottom. The visibility averages around 14 metres, which is perfectly fine for hunting out the small stuff, and there’s barely any current to contend with, making it a relaxed, easy dive. If you’re here between January and April, you might even get lucky with a pod of bottlenose dolphins cruising by, though the real draw is the tiny wonders underfoot. This is a site for photographers, for curious eyes, for anyone who enjoys a quiet, meditative dive.
