Miniliths - Mafia Island

Poito is one of our favourite drifts in Rangiroa, a lovely counterpoint to the more famous Tiputa Pass. We usually drop in on the ocean side, around a shallow coral plateau that sits at maybe 5 to 15 metres. The current here pulls you gently along the reef wall, a sloping drop-off that just keeps going down into the blue. It’s not a super deep dive, maxing out around 21 metres for us, but the action unfolds beautifully. We love it for the schools. Think big-eyed jacks, paddle perch, and those deep red big-eyed soldierfish swirling so thick they almost dim the light. Keep an eye out for grey reef sharks cruising by, and we’ve spotted plenty of green turtles just hanging out. The visibility is usually excellent, around 28 metres, which makes spotting those blackside hawkfish and orange-lined triggerfish a treat. It’s a pretty relaxed drift, perfect for anyone who enjoys a gentle ride with plenty to see, though a bit of experience with currents always helps in Rangiroa.
