Shangani Reef - Mafia Island

Let’s address the elephant in the room first: those 67 steps back up from Thousand Steps feel like a thousand when you’ve got a tank on. But trust us, the effort is worth it. Once you’re in, the reef here is just classic Bonaire: a beautiful wall that starts shallow and just keeps going. We love dropping in around midday, when the sun lights up the shallows and you can watch parrotfish crunching on the coral, their chewing audible if you listen close. Our favourite part is the upper reef, maybe 5-8 metres deep, where the finger coral and mustard hill coral are just thriving. Look closely for those tiny, perfectly camouflaged island gobies perched on the sponges. We often spot coney and hourglass basslets hovering in the crevices, and if you’re patient, a hogfish might cruise by. It's a relaxed drift, gentle current usually carrying you south. This site is brilliant for photographers who love macro, but the wide-angle shots of that healthy wall are pretty special too.
