COLEEN - Zanzibar & Pemba

Coleen isn't your typical deep, dark wreck dive. This barge, scuttled back in '87, sits almost entirely exposed at high tide, meaning your dive, or rather snorkel, is a maximum of two metres deep. And that's exactly why we love it. Forget the deco limits; here, you can spend ages just floating above the mangled metal, watching the light play through the structure. She might be dangerous, according to the official classification, but for a shallow wreck, she’s fantastic. The top deck is a rust-coloured maze, completely encrusted with small corals. You'll spot pipefish tucked into crevices and juvenile snapper darting between the beams. Our favourite thing is the way the anenomes cluster on the sheltered sides, their tentacles swaying gently with the surge. It’s a photographer's dream, especially on a bright, calm morning when the water is flat and the sun penetrates right to the bottom. Just be mindful of boat traffic, as it's pretty close to the port.
