MTWARA - Zanzibar & Pemba

The Mtwara is one of our favourite dives in the Zanzibar archipelago, a proper wreck with a story. She went down fast in 1990 after tangling with the MT Uhuru, settling upright at 49 metres. We love the sheer scale of her, 63 metres of merchant vessel just sitting there, a dark shadow appearing out of the blue. You’ll spend most of your bottom time finning along her deck, spotting moray eels peering from portholes and lionfish fanning their spines in the gloom of open cargo holds. The bows are particularly dramatic, usually swarming with schools of trevally. It’s a deep dive, naturally, so good air consumption and comfort at depth are a must. We always suggest going early in the morning, before any current picks up, when the light filtering through the water column gives the wreck an almost ethereal glow.
