Nyumba Ya Casa - Zanzibar & Pemba

The River Dive Coal Wharf Reserve is one of those Sydney sites we keep coming back to, especially when the conditions line up. You’re essentially doing a gentle drift along the Parramatta River, typically at high tide, which makes for an incredibly relaxed dive. It’s shallow, only ever really hitting 8m, and while the visibility can sometimes be a bit murky, around 3m on average, that’s part of its charm. We love it for the macro life and the sheer unexpectedness of what you might bump into. Cruising over the sandy bottom, you’ll spot longspine and marbled flatheads perfectly camouflaged, their eyes just peeking out. Keep an eye on the scattered rocks for nudibranchs and those tiny critters that really make a dive. Our favourite moments here are often the unexpected encounters: we’ve seen bull sharks glide past in the deeper sections of the drift, and the lined-lip cowries are always a treat. It’s also a surprising spot for birdlife topside; spotting an Australasian gannet or a striated heron while you’re gearing up adds a nice touch. Just be mindful of boat traffic – it is a working river, after all. This site is perfect for divers who appreciate the subtle beauty of a river system, enjoy a slow drift, and are keen to spot smaller, often overlooked creatures. It’s a great training spot for open water divers, thanks to the easy entry and consistent depth.
