MARIE LEHMANN - Bornholm

The Marie Lehmann, off Bornholm, is one of our favourite North Sea wrecks. She’s a motor vessel, sitting upright at 55 metres, sunk in 1972 after heavy weather peeled back her cargo hatch cover. What we love about her is the immediate sense of history, a real time capsule. The sheer scale is impressive as you descend, the stern and bow still very much intact. Visibility here can be surprisingly good, sometimes 15-20 metres, making the whole wreck visible as a dark shape on the seabed before you even reach her. We always suggest hitting this one early in the day; the currents around Bornholm can pick up, and you want to appreciate the calm. Look for the massive schools of cod that use the wreck for shelter, often hanging motionless in the holds. Wolfish occasionally poke their heads out from under plates, and the anemones covering the superstructure are a vibrant sight against the steel. This is a deep dive, definitely for experienced technical divers comfortable with deco. It’s a proper expedition, but the integrity of the wreck and the ambient light even at depth make it a truly rewarding one.
