HMS Bonaventure - Crete

Crete's a funny one for diving; you get some nice reefs, but it’s the wrecks that really grab us. The HMS Bonaventure is a prime example of why. This Dido-class light cruiser went down in 1940, and she’s settled upright, which is always a bonus. Descending onto her, you start to make out the superstructure, dark and imposing against the blue. We love how the deck guns are still there, almost defiant, like she’s ready for another fight. Penetration isn't really the game here, but there's plenty to explore externally. Swim along the deck, peer into hatches, and imagine the history. Schools of small jacks often swirl around the mast, and we’ve seen some decent-sized groupers holed up in the deeper sections of the hull. It’s a proper historical dive, a real window into a wartime past, and it’s surprisingly atmospheric. For wreck enthusiasts who appreciate naval history and a good, solid structure, Bonaventure is our favourite pick in Crete.
