HMS Diamond - Crete

The HMS Viper isn’t just a pile of metal on the seabed, it’s a tangible slice of naval history, a stark reminder of early turbine technology gone wrong. What we love about this wreck is how she’s settled, mostly upright, allowing you to really appreciate the scale of a destroyer from that era. You can trace her lines, almost feel the power she once had before hitting the Renny Rocks in a dense fog back in 1901. Her hull is now a tapestry of life. We often find big conger eels tucked into the machinery spaces, sometimes just their heads poking out from a collapsed bulkhead. The plates themselves are caked in orange and yellow crumb-of-bread sponge, and the holdfasts of dabberlocks and dulse wave in the surge. Look closely for the iridescent flash of butterfly blennies darting in and out of crevices. On a clear day, with decent visibility, the light filtering down through the water column onto the wreck is simply beautiful, giving the whole site a wonderfully atmospheric feel. It’s a proper dive for those who appreciate history and don't mind a bit of a current.
