HMS Greyhound - Crete

Diving the Prinsesse Ragnhild in Lofoten feels like stepping back into a maritime ghost story. We love this site for its chilling historical context – a steamboat that went down in 1940 with significant loss of life, now resting in the frigid, dark waters. It's a sombre, almost reverent dive, but the wreck itself is incredibly atmospheric. You descend into a green-blue twilight, the ship's silhouette gradually emerging from the gloom. Visibility here can be a bit moody, sometimes 15 metres, other times less, but that just adds to the mystery. We’ve finned past the bow, imagining the last moments, the deck superstructure still largely intact, draped in green algae. Look into the shadows of the hold for lumpsuckers, clinging to the metalwork, or a curious cod peering out from a porthole. This is a dive for those who appreciate history and a bit of a chill; it’s certainly not your tropical reef experience, but that’s precisely why we rate it. We’d suggest a good dive light and a thick drysuit. It's an experience that stays with you, long after you’ve surfaced into the crisp Lofoten air.
