HMS Hasty - Crete

The HMS Hasty off Crete is one of those wrecks that really gets under your skin. We love it because it’s a proper piece of history, not just some random pile of metal. You drop down, and suddenly, you’re face to face with this destroyer, sunk back in ‘44. The bow section is our favourite, where you can still make out the torpedo tubes, now home to clouds of damselfish that scatter as you approach. It’s a site for divers who appreciate a good wreck penetration, but it's not overly demanding. The stern lies deeper, around 30 metres, so it’s best for those comfortable with a bit of depth and perhaps a nitrox cert. What always strikes us is the way the light filters down, illuminating patches of the deck where gorgonians have taken hold, their fronds swaying gently in the subtle current. Keep an eye out for moray eels tucked into the darker crevices – they’re almost always there. We'd suggest going in the morning; the visibility tends to be best then, and you avoid the afternoon boat traffic.
