HMS Jackal - Crete

The HMS Jackal, a British destroyer from the Second World War, lies broken but compelling off the coast of Crete. We find it’s a site that really delivers a sense of history, the kind that whispers its story as you glide past twisted metal. You’ll descend onto a seabed of sand, around 40 metres, and the wreck gradually materialises, split into several large sections. It’s not one of those intact, ghostly ships you swim through, but rather a field of fascinating wreckage where the destroyer’s powerful lines are still discernible. Our favourite part is exploring the stern section, often draped in fishing nets, where schools of damselfish hover over barnacle-encrusted plates. Look closely amongst the debris and you’ll spot octopus tucked into crevices, their eyes watching you with intelligent curiosity. It’s definitely a dive for those who appreciate the narrative of a wreck, the way the sea reclaims and transforms human endeavour. We suggest timing your visit for late morning; the sun angle really brings out the textures of the metal and illuminates the occasional glint from a porthole. It’s a profound experience, connecting with a piece of wartime history resting peacefully on the seabed.
