Mononaftis - Crete

Mononaftis, now this is a site we always make time for when we're in Crete. It’s not just the sheer number of species, though 366 recorded is nothing to scoff at in the Med. What we love here is the dramatic topography. You drop down into a series of small caverns and overhangs, the light playing tricks as it filters through the surface. It feels a bit like exploring an ancient, submerged labyrinth, which, let's be honest, is part of the allure of diving in Greece. Keep your eyes peeled for the Red Lionfish – they’re fairly new to the area, so spotting one is always a talking point. We’ve had great luck finding Green Shrimp tucked into crevices, their antennae waving like tiny flags. And if you’re patient, you might see a Loggerhead Turtle glide past, often just cruising in the deeper sections. Our favourite moment here is always drifting past the Red Coral, a rich splash of colour against the rock, especially when a school of Rhomboid Sweepers shimmers past. For divers who appreciate dramatic rock formations and the quiet hunt for smaller, less common species, Mononaftis truly delivers. It’s a calmer dive, usually without strong currents, making it perfect for lingering and exploring the details.
